Citizen Portal
The Independent Lakota Nation provides our citizens the opportunity to formally exercise their legal and political relationship with the nation and in relationship with the United States and other international government entities. ILN citizenship affirms your connection to Lakota customary law, governance, and community.
All new citizens must be supported by a Respectful Elder, the ILN Spokesperson, or other Itacan.
ILN citizenship means embracing and exercising the rights, responsibilities, and protections under Lakota customary law and International law. Rights that are not exercised, are taken away. While ILN can supply education on rights and responsibilities, members should also recognize the need for effective self-advocacy in the face of United States local, state, or Federal agencies or representatives who are unfamiliar with the legal instruments that guarantee independent expression of our political, social, cultural, and economic institutions.

Problems with Documents?
We are regularly updating our citizen documents and vendors in response to citizen needs and changing conditions. If you have any problems with U.S. state or local jurisdictions, please contact the Cante Tenza Okolakiciye, Strong Heart Warrior Society at cantetenza13@gmail.com.
In almost every case where local, state or national officials have not respected our documents, we have successfully educated and advocated for our citizen’s rights. Many non-Indigenous officials and law enforcement do not know treaty law, trade law, or International law that supports our rights.
Please note, at this time we do not participate in the United States REAL ID system. Doing so would compromise our independent nation status.
If you are breaking United States or Lakota customary law, our ability to advocate on your behalf may be compromised. Situations are handled on a case by case basis.
