Maka Wakan Sanctuary

Tantanka Oyate. the Buffalo People.

The Maka Wakan sanctuary will be comprised of approximately 200 square miles in the northern Paha Sapa, the spiritual center of Tetuwan Lakota territory known as the Black Hills.   This area will be open for Lakota to inhabit, roam, and live in our traditional manner.

The establishment of the Maka Wakan is an essential priority in asserting Lakota independence. We have already initiated contacts with government agencies and landowners as a part of this process.

This “sanctuary” is essential and vital to the perpetuation of Lakota as a distinct people and culture. The free and nomadic lifestyle alongside our buffalo relatives with attachment to this sacred land area is the core of Lakota Spirituality, it makes us who we are.  This area is vital for preserving our language and cultural lifeway that is on the verge of extinction.

Honor tax contributions of concerned U.S. citizens can be used to help establish and maintain the Maka Wakan Sanctuary.
